Getting to DC

Getting to Washington, DC!

So you want to visit our nation's capital, eh?  First of all, what's wrong with you?  Just kidding - DC is a great place between its free museums, international flair, and political intrigue.  Still, getting there can be a pain, especially if you need to do it on a budget.  So, here are the best ways to get yourself to Washington, short of being elected.

One of the cheapest and most time-efficient ways to travel to DC is to drive.  For only the price of gas, you can be at the White House in no time (well, 2-1/2 hours to be exact).  Even if you don't have a car, there are always Swatties heading down in that direction (particularly around breaks), so check out the Jolt's Ride Board for potential travel partners.

If no one's going your way and you're pressed for time, consider flying or taking a train to DC.  While the idea of flying just over a 100 miles might seem like over-kill, you may be surprised at some of the airfare deals you'll be able to find - visit out our Flying Cheap page for more info.  Amtrak, on the other hand, might not seem like over-kill, but at $100 roundtrip (all travel expenses included), it may be too steep for your budget.  However, with a total trip time from Swat of just 2-1/2 hours, it's definitely a good option for those in a rush.  All you need to do is take SEPTA to 30th Street Station, then connect to an Amtrak train going to Washington's Union Station.

Now, if price is an object and time is less essential, we offer the cheapest, most time-consuming method of public transport to DC:

1) Take SEPTA to Market East Station in Center City. (Time: ~35 minutes, Cost: $4-5)

2) Exit the station onto Filbert St. and walk across the street to the Greyhound depot.

3) Take Greyhound to the Washington depot.  There are a limited number of trips each day, so choose your time carefully.  (Time: 3-4 hours - depending on the # of stops, Cost: ~$20)

4) Walk away from the depot, heading down 1st St. to Union Station. (Time: 10 minutes)

5) From Union Station, you'll have access to the Washington Metro, putting all of the city and surrounding region within your reach.

Total Time: 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 hours
Total Cost: $45-50 (roundtrip)

Enjoy DC!
