Contrary to popular opinion, Philly International is not the only option for flying out of
the area.
In fact, there is an alternative less than an hour away from Swat:
Trenton-Mercer County Airport.
Although the airport is not much to look at, its sole airline,
Shuttle America
(which now operates as a division of US Airways), provides service to Boston at
rates that are usually far cheaper than its big-name competitors.
Best of all, getting there is relatively easy. If you can
find someone to drive
you, it's just an hour away (directions
here). Even if you have to go it alone though, it's still mighty easy:
1) Take the R3 from Swat all the
way to the other end of the line, West Trenton (Time: 1-1/2 hours, Cost: $14 -
roundtrip). Be aware though, that while some trains make the entire trip, at
certain times you will need to switch trains in Center City, so consult the
SEPTA schedule before departing.
2) At the West Trenton station, you have two choices:
a) You can walk about 1-1/2 miles to the airport. This is not a bad
option on a nice day and will take you about 20-25 minutes. However, there are
parts of the path without sidewalk so be warned that the trip is a little
treacherous if you have lots of luggage. For step-by-step directions, click

-or-
b) You can call a cab. It may take the driver a little while to get there as
most companies operate out of downtown Trenton, so leave time for the wait. The
fare should be about $10. Click
here for a list of taxi companies serving that area.
By the way, if you're planning on taking a cab, you may instead want to go to
the main Trenton station, via the R7 (click
here for
directions), since there's always cabs waiting there. It's about $12 for
the trip to the airport. This method isn't quite as efficient though - the
train ride takes longer since you need to make a connection in Center City.
